Why Does Low Inventory Matter?

The drop in housing inventory means that prospective buyers and renters are competing for fewer homes. This leads to bidding wars and drives up the cost of housing which has soared over 80% since 2017.

But Isn't Connecticut Already Building Housing?

No, Connecticut is permitting historically low amounts of housing. Despite a few headlines to the contrary, Connecticut is currently permitting at about 25% of the rate it did in the 1960s and 1970s despite the extreme increase in prices.

How can we fix this?

A recent study found that Connecticut is short over 300,000 homes, at current permitting rates it would take over 60 years to fill this deficit assuming zero new growth over that period - Just to house the people who already want to live in Connecticut.

Today, the permitting process for new housing can stretch years and is rife with arbitrary and capricious denials. Reforming the permitting process is key to getting more homes built. Over 4,000 homes are being denied per year during permitting based on recent research.
